Dear
friends:
Welcome to
my post! My name is Silvia, I am 27 years old and I am from Galicia, north of
Spain. This time, I´m going to tell you about a special place, I first learned about this location
thanks to a friend named Monik and now I want to show it to you so that you may know a little more about it.
Its name is
Castricum, it is a
municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of North Holland.
It is a seaside town
that draws in a fair
share of tourists who mainly come to visit the beach and nearby dune landscape.
Large tracts of sand
and a climate that even in what they, the Dutch call a good morning, makes a bath become an act of courage and defiance rather than
pleasure because the water is very very cold. But its beauty compensates for the cold water with a fantastic view.
Moreover, in
Castricum's vicinity one also finds the lake of Alkmaar-Uitgeest which offers
various sailing and windsurfing opportunities.
The
municipality is composed of the
following towns, villages and districts: Castricum, Akersloot, Bakkum, De Woude, Limmen. So, it has about 36.463 inhabitants. Do not expect to see great buildings, but a
welcoming place with a romantic atmosphere, cozy and very
similar to Galicia environment (For its greenery and sync with nature.)
For lovers
of history, you should know that you will enjoy the story of an incredible
battle, thousands of memories, monuments and many other specific things
On 6
October 1799, a big battle took place, the battle of Castricum. The battle was fought during the War of
the Second Coalition against Revolutionary France between French and Dutch
forces under the command of General Guillaume Brune and Herman Willem Daendels
and British and Russian forces under the command of the Duke of York, Sir Ralph
Abercromby and the Prince of Orange.
If you want
to see some things about that battle, in the Huis met de Kogel (House with the
Cannonball) in Castricum, a cannonball that got stuck in the wall during the
battle can still be seen. A
plaque beneath the cannonball commemorates the battle. Various locality
names in Castricum also provide a reminder of the battle, like the Russenbergen
dunes and the Doodelaan street. Or the Russisch Monument in Bergen marks the
fighting there. The French victory was also commemorated on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris as
"Alkmaer"
Also, there are other culture sites like Huis van Hilde, that is the provincial
archaeology centre in Castricum.
In addition
you do not have to worry about transportation, the town is served by Castricum
railway station. From here there are 4 trains an hour to Amsterdam, with a
journey time of 28 minutes.
Finally, if
you are interested in old cars, you can visit The Castricum Collector Cars. It is a place where your dreams will
actually come true: http://www.juricastricum.nl/
To finish I
just want to say that
you can find more information about
Castricum on the next web page: http://www.castricum.nl/portal-home . But you need to translate it.
So go visit
this great place with a precious environment, gorgeous-looking beaches and a very interesting cultural history.
